‘Loneliness’ by Tilda Swinton

Loneliness by Tilda Swinton

The celebrated British actor Tilda Swinton has long been a devotee of Haider Ackermann (and somewhat his muse) so for A#3, Tilda has offered a philosophical essay on the subject of loneliness. Beginning her tale, Tilda uses the beautiful young boy in her photograph to isolate and personify her feelings on loneliness. Swinton’s prose is heartfelt and honest, as she questions, or rather asserts, the differences between ‘lonely’ and ‘alone’, and the importance of solitude for personal freedom.

Lonely is the description of aloneness, its flavour, its decor and its architectural underpinnings” – Tilda Swinton

We all die alone” – Raymond Williams, socialist thinker.

I suggest that an acceptance and celebration of loneliness may be the last primal taboo of modern secular society” – Tilda Swinton
