Portraits by Sandro Kopp
German-born artist Sandro Kopp has developed a distinct and personal aesthetic in his oil painting, utilising broad brush strokes and barely blended colours to create portraits with highly contrasting features and complex skin tonality. Among his many celebrated subjects is our A#3 curator Haider Ackermann, pictured above, and Haider’s friend and muse Tilda Swinton, pictured below.
Other famous faces in Kopp’s portfolio include Yves Saint Laurent designer Stefano Pilati, film director Mike Mills, and fashion photographer Ali Madhavi.
Aside from his more traditional portraiture, Kopp experiments with time constraints and the evolution of an image, building a series of scrutinizing self portraiture and exploring the development of an artist to subject relationship through multiple sittings with the same model, such as his work with Waris Ahluwalia.
