Seascapes by Hiroshi Sugimoto
“Mystery of mysteries, water and air are right there before us in the sea. Every time I view
the sea, I feel a calming sense of security, as if visiting my ancestral home; I embark on a
voyage of seeing.” - Hiroshi Sugimoto.
Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto has long been fascinated by the ocean, and has created an evolving series of seascapes captured across the world. A selection of this series can be seen in A#3 by Haider Ackermann, courtesy of New York’s Sonnabend Gallery.
Sugimoto uses an 8×10 inch large-format camera, with his composition using the horizon to slice the images in two smoky halves. The results are soft and subdued with subtle gradients of tone, so beautifully echoed in the fluid folds of dip-dyed Haider Ackermann jerseys.
