La plus belle fille du monde, Tatsuya Kitiyama

Photography by Tatsuya Kitiyama

Tatsuya Kitiyama first met Martin Margiela in 1990, through Kristina De Coninck, with whom he would later manage the Paris store of Maison Martin Margiela. For A#1, Tatsuya offers this simple, high-impact photographic contribution entitled ‘La plus belle fille du monde” or ‘the most beautiful girl in the world’. Turned on its side in the magazine but rotated here for full effect, the images show these poetic words scrawled on the sidewalk in white chalk. The ‘L’ and the ‘A’ are accented as though mathematical angles and other letters are skewed and reworked, possibly as purposeful additions, revisions or serendipitous accidents. Either way, the overall effect is childlike and uneasy. It seems a suitably ‘Margiela’ love note if ever there was one.
