Exclusive: Jimmy De Sana by Laurie Simmons
American art photographer Laurie Simmons has fostered many positive ties with the fashion industry, aligning her surreal and psychological imagery with many interesting projects including images for Chanel, windows for Comme des Garçons and Proenza Schouler’s A#9.
We are proud to present an exclusive image from Laurie Simmons’ personal archive – a portrait of photographer Jimmy De Sana that she took in 1987. The image is from the series ‘Walking & Lying Objects’ and is entitled ‘Walking Camera (Jimmy the Camera)’, and echoes her signature style – with only Jimmy’s legs in view, covered in white stockings with his body stuck inside a giant reproduction of a box camera. The costume is a prop from the film ‘The Wiz’, a modern remake of the classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and came courtesy of the Museum of Moving Image, New York. The image holds mixed messages of intimacy – as the two former roommates play with the concept of a photographer truly captured by a camera and again by another photographer – truly a slave to their own tools.
Our thanks to Laurie Simmons and the Laurie Simmons Studio for their support.
