Mutant, by Yong Ho Ji
In one of the first few pages of A Magazine curated by Riccardo Tisci, one can find the above image of Korean artist Yong Ho Ji’s exquisite sculpture, ‘Mutant’. Poised gracefully on a simple wooden plinth, the head and neck of a horse with a single horn is rendered in writhing, coiling car tyres. Mimicking the muscular structures of the beast, Yong Ho Ji’s intricate work holds an air of absurd realism, like some sort of industrial taxidermy that has immortalized a mythical creature. This unlikely interpretation of a conventional art form is entirely in tune with Riccardo’s aesthetic vision – something old and something new, a classic notion with a modern subversion.
