Aligning with the London FW11 shows this week (in a rather timely fashion), we offer pieces from young Dutch designer Michael Van Der Ham, who has shown in London over the past two seasons under the energetic & creative umbrella of the British Fashion Council’s London Showrooms banner. Van Der Ham has become known for his an eclectic aesthetic that mismatches different references within single garments, for a refreshing & artistic effect.

As our first menswear showcase for Spring Sumer 2011 we offer a look from Belgian designer Dries Van Noten, who began his learning in fashion in his father’s Antwerp boutiques, and went on to graduate the Fashion Academy to take his designs to London as a part of the original ‘Antwerp Six’ in the early 1980s. Today Dries’ menswear designs reflect classical tailoring paired with subtle military detailing, which is often underlined by contemporary artistic references & refined literary or pop-cultural themes.

In our second installment we bring you a luxurious leather silhouette from A#3 curator Haider Ackermann’s Fall Winter 2010 show. This outing for Haider was a new chapter in his elegant narrative of texture and shade – continuing the sleek, tight silhouette he has developed in the last several seasons, with a strict balance of comfort and restraint.

Off the runway, the garments below translate into covetable, neutral pieces shot through with an inimitable glamour.

The latest project from iconic designer & photographer Hedi Slimane takes us to the idyllic California coastline through the spirit of two young waifs, in the new film ”I LOVE USA”, featured on TheCorner.com. The short black & white piece is Slimane’s idealistic vision of the United States. The premise is simple: Sidney and Wolf are two teenagers who meet for the first time in Venice beach. The pair were scouted by Slimane at the Coachella rock festival in 2009 and 2010 respectively, and met for the first time on set.

The title comes from the nickname Slimane gave to Sidney “USA”, who has appeared in many of his diary’s photographs, after he decided that she was the iconic embodiment of the California girl and the aesthetic representation of all-American beauty.

Sidney improvises a chaotic cheerleader (far from the sweet imagery of cheerleading in American culture) and Wolf is an indie teen transposed in an new representation of “Peter and the Wolf‟. He accompanies Sidney on his out of tune cello, wearing a wolf mask. Behind the pair, Slimane’s signature American flag is visible, a recurring metaphor in many of his works.

This exclusive video is an improvisational exercise that highlights the naїvety & innocence of Sidney and Wolf, featuring themes that have made the designer famous throughout the world. The representation of a generation, the diaphanous beauty of Sidney and the very slim silhouette of Wolf project an intimate emotional atmosphere.

For over fifteen years the Maison Martin Margiela has executed a seasonal charity project, creating a tee shirt that carries the message of AIDS awareness to the street. With a print designed by Lutz Huelle, this 100% cotton, v-necked and screen printed tee holds a frank and simple message – though in true Margiela style, it is somehow distorted. In the above image, we see the tee and its printed message:

“THERE IS MORE ACTION TO BE DONE TO FIGHT AIDS THAN TO WEAR THIS T SHIRT BUT IT’S A GOOD START”

However when unfolded and worn, the tee shirt’s message is dissected into several parts – some worn inside the neck of the tee, some on the outside of the neck, and the rest at the back along the bottom hem. As such, the parts that are visible can provoke conversation to explain the text, spreading the message of AIDS awareness throughout communities.

For A#1, Elisabeth Broekaert photographed a white-on-white example of the tee, that was first issued in the Fall Winter 93/94. Like a stark x-ray, the image crosses a double page on it’s side, with the letters reflected – making the message even more difficult to read.

Each season the house creates a new colour combination, often corresponding to a key colour for the season. Above is the latest release for Spring Summer 2010, a vibrant lemon yellow with white painted text.

While we celebrate Kris Van Assche’s A#7 for December, it is wonderful to discover the work of our past curators (including Kris) collected together in different and exciting ways.

As such, today we present an abstract showcase of the Fall Winter 2009 collections from TheCorner.com by acclaimed British fashion photographer and filmmaker Nick Knight and ShowStudio. Entitled ‘Portent’, the film is a series of short sequences shown in ornate baroque frames, as a dreamy heroine’s wardrobe shifts from designer to designer, beginning with a look from Kris Van Assche.

Through the piece – as she reclines on a plush chaise, plucks sad petals from a flower or poses delicately by candlelight – the model wears outfits from A#1′s Maison Martin Margiela, A#2′s Haider Ackermann and past contributors Rick Owens, Raf Simons and Ann Demeulemeester. With a glimpse from the early days of the ‘A’ story, Hussein Chalayan (from NºC) and Viktor & Rolf (NºE) are also featured. Each designer provides a dramatic and sensual silhouette – with Knight’s soft and shadowy atmosphere emphasizing the texture and sheen of TheCorner.com’s handpicked selection.
