Compliments to Beautiful Men #2: Oscar v d Boogaard
The second of our conversations between A#6 curator Veronique Branquinho and her beautiful men is with author Oscar van den Boogard, the man responsible for personifying Veronique in the charming passage ‘Moi, Veronique’ which introduces the designer at the beginning of her issue.
Oscar is a Dutch author whose literary work has received wide critical acclaim and been translated from Dutch into many languages. His titles include Julia’s Delight, about the life of Julia Callebaut, a woman whose greatest delight is ‘pretiosissimum donum Dei’ or ‘the most precious gift of god’ (the coupling of man and woman) and the associated ‘ecstasy’.
The first page of his feature includes a portrait of Oscar by Alex Salinas, seated on a tire swing in an ivy-entangled setting wearing nothing but a rabbit fur coat of Veronique’s creation. His expression is stern and his eyes piercing, yet is underwritten by a hint of fun and playfullness, which is hard to avoid when one is sitting in a fur coat on a swing i think?
The following pages are a beautifully simple collage entitled ‘OSCAR WORLD’. It features images of his friends (including photographer Manon De Boer), a list of his dislikes entitled ‘BLACK LIST’, a cover of his novel ‘Magic Man’, his cat, house, stationery wall hanger.
A very special image in the bottom corner is Douglas Gordon’s ‘Tattoo for reflection’, a photograph of Oscar’s tattoo of the word ‘guilt’ written backwards on his left shoulder blade.
Oscar and Veronique Branquinho each took five words to describe each other.
OSCAR ON HER: ambiguous, elusive, pure elegance, speed of light, sugar me
SHE ON OSCAR: speed of mind, disarming, flowing, high-spirited, winged
